1 lb. butter (no substitute)
1 ¼ cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
4 ½ cups flour
Strawberry or Raspberry Jam
Powdered Sugar Glaze
Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla together. Add flour. Dough will be very stiff. Roll in 1 inch balls and make imprint with thumb. Bake dough at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and put jam in thumbprint. Bake another 10 minutes. Glaze while hot.
*Traditionally the dough is patted into strips, about 3 x 11 inches, on a cookie sheet. This recipe makes 3-4 strips. Bake as directed above, then put jam down the center of the strip. Bake again as directed, glaze and then cut across short ways into 1 x 3 inch cookies.
